silk is a protein fibre, much like your own hair. it is strong, but it doesn't like heat, friction or harsh soap. treat it gently and it stays soft and fluid for years.
this is how we care for our own silk, and how we hope you will care for yours.
how do you wash silk underwear by hand?
- fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water, no warmer than 30°C.
- add a small amount of mild detergent made for silk or wool, without enzymes or bleach.
- turn the piece inside out and let it rest in the water for a few minutes. press the water gently through the fabric. don't rub, twist or wring.
- rinse in clean, cool water until no soap remains.
can you wash silk underwear in the washing machine?
yes, with care. put the piece in a laundry bag, choose a cold delicate or silk programme, use a very mild detergent and the lowest spin. wash it with similar colours, and with nothing that has zips or hooks that could catch the silk.
how do you dry silk?
roll the piece in a clean towel to press out the water, then lay it flat or hang it in the shade. never put silk in the dryer, and keep it out of direct sun, which can fade the colour. if you want to iron it, use the silk setting and iron it inside out.
how often should you wash silk underwear?
after every wear, like any underwear. this is why many women keep two or three silk thongs, so one can rest while another is worn. you can find them as the silk thong, set of 3.
how do you store silk?
fold your pieces loosely in a drawer or a cotton pouch, away from sunlight and perfume. avoid plastic, which holds on to moisture.
what should you avoid?
- hot water and the tumble dryer
- bleach, fabric softener and detergents with enzymes
- perfume, deodorant or body oil directly on the silk
- wringing, twisting or scrubbing
