Caring for silk

caring for silk is a small ritual. mulberry silk is a natural protein fibre, a lot like your own hair. treated gently, it keeps its softness and its quiet glow.

washing

  • hand wash in cool water, up to 30°C.
  • use a little mild, pH-neutral detergent made for silk or wool, without enzymes.
  • let the piece soak for no more than five minutes and move it gently through the water. no rubbing, no scrubbing.
  • rinse in cool water.
  • prefer the machine? use a laundry bag, the silk or delicates programme, cold water, a very mild detergent and the lowest spin.
  • dry cleaning works too.

drying

  • never wring or twist. press the water out softly, then roll the piece in a clean towel.
  • lay it flat or hang it to dry in the shade, away from direct sun and radiators. sunlight can fade the colour over time.
  • no tumble dryer.

what silk doesn't like

  • bleach, fabric softener and biological detergents. their enzymes break down protein fibres.
  • perfume, deodorant and body oil straight onto the fabric. let them settle into your skin first.
  • velcro, rough surfaces and jewellery that can catch the fibres.

the first washes

our silk is dyed in a deep brown. dark silk can release a little colour in its first washes, so wash it on its own or with similar colours.

smoothing

silk relaxes as it dries. if you'd like it smoother, steam it lightly or iron it inside out on the lowest silk setting, with a thin cloth in between.

storing

  • store your pieces clean and completely dry.
  • fold them into a breathable cotton pouch, away from light and damp.
  • give each piece a day of rest between wears.
